Welcome back Primary 4 and I hope you are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead! We will be participating in various forms of learning over the next year both in the classroom and through outdoor learning as much as possible. In numeracy, we will be learning about place value and time, as well as working on our mental maths with Mrs Bell. We will be exploring how these concepts are used in everyday contexts. Furthermore, we will be doing daily ‘Number Talks’ to develop our maths skills. In Literacy, we will be looking at a ‘defeating a monster’ type of story and creating our own, as well as reading our class novel, George’s Marvellous Medicine. We will look at various health and well – being topics in term one such as the qualities of friendship, having a positive growth mindset and how to be safe online. Finally, our first class topic of primary 4 will be Vikings which you should find fun and interesting! I am looking forward to an exciting first term with you all!
Outdoor Learning and STEM – Teacher NCC Cover A note from Mrs Hendry… This term, I am covering non-class contact time and through a themed approach, I am providing children with opportunities to learn across many areas of the curriculum. Lessons have a particular focus on outdoor learning and STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), requiring students to draw on and develop their imagination, problem solving and creativity skills, as well as building on their resilience, determination and ability to work with others in a team. So far, the children have had great fun learning about forests through woodland visits and have also enjoyed learning about shelters by building dens and putting up tents. Our Gingerbread Man engineering challenge provided a context for investigating buoyancy and developed their problem solving skills. Next we will be learning about the science behind fires, how to build a fire and have the chance to listen to and create our own campfire stories. We might even get to enjoy a wee toasted marshmallow if we are lucky ; ) Keep an eye on Twitter for what we’ve been up to.
